A recent report from September 2014 brought to light a worrying possibility: head injuries suffered by sports stars could be to blame for an increment in domestic violence.
Take, for example, the case of Jovan Belcher. In 2012, the former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker took his own life after murdering his girlfriend. This season feels strange, but it shouldn't. Its very similar to last year, with the Hokies needing to win 2 of its last 3 games to finish with a winning record and become bowl eligible. Will they do it? Its anybody's guess.
The bigger story is the new phase of existence the Virginia Tech Football program now finds itself. Much like Florida State with Bobby Bowden, and Penn State with Joe Paterno, we are officially in the phase of "waiting to see how smooth or how ugly our transition away from our patriarch coach" will really be.
But there is a season to be salvaged.
The last 2 1/2 seasons have been down for Virginia Tech Football, but I've felt that the majority of the fan base was not yet in crisis mode. Despite two mediocre seasons, some bad losses, coaching changes, and a sometimes loud segment of the fan base saying that big chances were needed, my sense is most were in 'wait it out' mode.

Virginia Tech has hired former Marquette Golden Eagles basketball coach Buzz Williams. The deal is reportedly for $18 million for seven years. I personally think this was a great hire for the Hokies. I hope he can bring over the success he had at Marquette to Virginia Tech, because we really need it. Only time will tell, but for now I am very excited to see what the future holds for the Hokies basketball program.
James Johnson has officially been fired today. This comes as no surprise after the Hokies finished last in the ACC for the second consecutive season. James Johnson took over after Jim Weaver fired Seth Greenberg. Johnson had served as an assistant under Greenberg for five seasons. Before Greenberg was fired, Johnson had accepted an assistant coaching job at Clemson, but once Tech offered him the head coaching job, he came back to Blacksburg.
A few days ago, I wrote about how Virginia Tech needed some help at the quarterback position, especially here in the 2014 season. Today, various media outlets confirmed that Texas Tech quarterback Michael Brewer will indeed transfer to Virginia Tech after meeting with Scot Loeffler this weekend.
