1.29p-grimesEarlier this afternoon, Mike Barber of the Richmond Times Dispatch posted a blog informing the Virginia Tech fanbase that Jeff Grimes had accepted the offensive line coach position at LSU.  Grimes was hired last January when the Hokies wanted to overhaul their offensive staff and only spent one season in Blacksburg.

This is the 2nd time in his career that Grimes has only spent one season with a program.  He left his job in 2001 as Boise State’s offensive line coach to take a position with Arizona State.  In fact, Grimes has never stayed in one place very long with his previous stint at Auburn being his longest tenured position at four seasons.

For the Hokies, this means Tech will have to find a new offensive line coach to help rebuild an improving offensive line.  They’ll also need to hire this person soon to avoid what could be a disaster on National Signing Day.  Tech has five offensive line commitments in this 2014 class, however at least one will likely decommit.  Brady Taylor is visiting Ohio State this weekend and with Grimes on his way to LSU, there’s very little hope for the Hokies to retain him.

A few names that will likely pop up in the next few days will be Baltimore Ravens Assistant Offensive Line coach Todd Washington who is a VT alumnus, Chris Malone who served as OL coach at JMU when they defeated Virginia Tech in 2010 as well as an OL Graduate Assistant here at VT in 1999 and 2000, Boston College Offensive Line coach Justin Frye who coached with Scot Loeffler at Florida and Temple, and Andy Moeller who is currently the Assistant Offensive Line coach along with Washington for the Ravens.  Moeller also served as OL coach at Michigan during Scot Loeffler’s tenure with the university.
