College football season is over and most of use are left to focus on the NFL playoffs.  The NFL will feed us some football for a few more weeks, and you can check your lines at for the big games this weekend.  But soon the long w wait for it to start again next fall begins.

In the mean time, let's talk more Hokie Recruiting.  Virginia Tech is in dire need of playmakers who are players who can make the big play, who can intercept passes, and who can score  touchdowns.

I ranked Greg Stroman 10th in my State of Virginia Rankings this year because in my eyes, he’s one of the top playmakers in the state. He’s dynamic in the return game and was absolutely electric as a quarterback in his final year at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, VA.

Although he won’t enroll until the summer, Stroman is the type of player who could assist Virginia Tech immediately as a punt returner. He’s very agile in the open field and even though he’s only 165 pounds at most, he’s a tough go to bring down.

However, I would think the Virginia Tech coaching staff would like to redshirt Stroman if possible, allowing him to add enough weight before throwing him to the wolves. Also, Tech has depth at both safety positions and I’m not sure if Stroman could enter this summer and perform well enough to play as a cornerback, if he is slotted there instead.

I really view Stroman the same way I viewed Deon Newsome in last year’s class. He’s a guy that’s going to be a great player for Virginia Tech by the time he’s an upperclassman. However, he may need to take a year or two to adjust before really blossoming into a star here in Blacksburg.

Freshman Impact

Not all talent evaluations are equal. One scout can look at a quarterback and give him a 3rd round grade citing his inability to throw on the run or his lackluster ability to read a defense. Another scout can give a quarterback a 1st round grade based solely on potential and his ability to move in the pocket. My point is don’t always take a “talent evaluators” view on a prospect as gospel. For me, when several former Virginia Tech players come out and call a certain prospect one of the best in the class, despite a lesser star ranking, I’m going to listen to them over anybody with a Rivals badge.

Stroman is that recruit and statistically, he is vastly underrated. Stroman played quarterback for Stonewall Jackson High School over the past two seasons an was a dominant force with the ball in his hands. Granted, he will have to go through a bit of an adjustment period as he focuses solely on being a defensive back for the first time in his career. That said, I don’t think he’s going to have much of an issue picking up the position. He had 3 pick sixes during practice of the Offense-Defense Bowl down in Florida. Those instincts are innate and something that you just can’t teach.

As it stands, I don’t see Stroman playing this season due to his weight and the fact that he’s not enrolling until July. The Hokies are thin at cornerback but giving Stroman a year to adjust would be extremely beneficial in the long run. However, you all know my feelings towards the kid and if he works hard during his time here in Blacksburg, I think we’re going to wonder why Rivals only rated him a two star four years from now.
