It wasn’t pretty but it was a win. 50 years from now or 50 minutes from now, that’s all that matters when it comes to rivalry games. The Hokies once again stifled an anemic Virginia offense and did just enough to beat UVA 16-6. Neither team scored in the 2nd half.
Logan Thomas dissected the Hoos to open up the game but Tech failed to score on their first drive, settling for a chip shot field goal. Both the Hokies and the Hoos traded field goals on their opening drives. Tech then pieced together another long drive only to bog down in the redzone and kick a field goal.
After taking a 9-6 lead in the 2nd quarter, the Hokies finally scored the only touchdown of the game when Trey Edmunds broke a few tackles and dashed into the endzone. The Hokies took a 16-6 lead and held on for the final 35 minutes without surrendering or scoring another point.
Overall, this was a sloppy, ugly, tough game. Tech lost running back Trey Edmunds for 4-5 months to a broken tibia. Brandon Facyson injured his shoulder in the 4th quarter and is in danger of missing Tech’s bowl game. Both would have been crucial blows for the Hokies had they advanced to play Florida State in next week’s ACC Championship game.
