fbrec barnett michael 2015 home The Hokies Add Two New CommitmentsWith high school football season winding down, there will inevitably be a flurry of commitments across the country over the next few weeks as players narrow their sights on schools they want to attend. Today, Virginia Tech added two players to their future rosters when 2015 defensive line prospect Michael Barnett and 2014 defensive tackle prospect Steve Sobczak both committed to the Hokies.

Barnett has been a Virginia Tech lean ever since the Hokies offered him last year. Obviously, Barnett did favor the in-state schools early on but neither seemed too interested in offering him before seeing junior film. Since Tech evaluated him at their recruiting camp two summers ago, the Hokies were comfortable with extending a verbal offer to him and today, Barnett accepted.

Right now, it’s tough to place the South Carolina native on the defensive line. At 6’4” and 248 pounds, he’s already big enough to play defensive end in college and he still has one year of high school football left to play. By the time he enrolls, he could easily be in the 260-270 range, which may cause him to move inside to defensive tackle.

To be completely honest, I think Barnett could be a tremendous offensive tackle prospect with the way he moves his feet so hopefully he’s up for the position change if the Hokies become clogged with too many bodies at on the defensive line

There’s still plenty of time to speculate on what position he’ll play but the fact is Tech picked up a really solid commitment today. Barnett held offers from Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Florida, Tennessee, and NC State according to his 247Sports profile. This gives Tech two four star commitments to kick off the 2015 class. Four star safety Marcus Lewis committed to Virginia Tech last week.

We’ve followed Sobczak’s recruitment here on the site and over on our message board. Obviously, this seemed like something that’s been waiting to happen for the last few months. With JMU’s coaching staff getting the ax today, I’m not shocked by this development.

Sobczak isn’t the most skilled lineman but he has a great burst and he really fits how Virginia Tech structures their defense. Sometimes you can go out and recruit a really talented player and they struggle to fit in your scheme. Other times you can recruit someone who may have some physical flaws but they blossom because of how you use them. Hopefully, Sobczak falls into that latter category for Tech.

According to reports over on The Twitter, Sobczak will enroll in the fall instead of January.  He was originally considered a greyshirt recruit. Sobczak is a teammate of current Virginia Tech commit Vinny Mihota.
