With the start of not only Virginia Tech’s season but also high school football season’s around the country, recruiting news has slowed significantly in recent weeks. However, a busy Saturday provided some recruiting news for Hokie fans as four star defensive tackle Ricky Walker ended his recruitment by committing to Virginia Tech. Walker chose the Hokies over offers from Nebraska, South Carolina, Penn State, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Michigan State, Maryland, and about 15 or so others. You can view his full offer list here.
Up close, Walker has a good frame that Bud Foster and strength coach Mike Gentry will be able to work with. He has a low center of gravity, similar to that of past defensive tackles and he shows the explosiveness you want at that position on film. He will need time to transform his body from high school lineman to college defensive lineman. Honestly, that could take a few years so I’m not counting on Walker to play immediately. Plus, with Tech’s current depth chart, I don’t think he’ll need to play immediately either.

Overall, Walker is a good pickup and one that will boost Tech’s class rankings. With Derrick Nnadi still out there, the Hokies are clearly not finished on the defensive line. I think the goal here is to bring in one player at each position along the line, meaning that two spots are yet to be filled. With Rayjon Simies out of Georgia picking up an offer, the Hokies will look to identify another defensive end to go along with Vinny Mihota as well.
