Few envisioned a 6-16 finish to this season after the Hokies started 7-0 with victories over Iowa and Oklahoma State. Although this season will not be one that stands the test of time in college basketball lore, it’s one Tech fans should embrace. Erick Green was sensational last night in Tech’s victory over the Clemson Tigers. The senior guard scored 29 on the night thanks to a 5-for-7 effort from behind the 3-point arc.

The Hokies as a whole played with more poise and effort than in recent contests. I’m sure the team wanted to win this game for Green who has, at times, put this team on his back only to fall just short of a victory.

C.J. Barksdale had another great night, scoring 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds. He also finished with a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

Robert Brown put some of his struggles behind him and finished 6-8 from the field. His 13 points continue a positive three game double figures scoring streak.

However, Saturday was all about Green who has now played his final home game at Cassell Coliseum. If it were up to me, Green would have a banner placed in Cassell next season. After all, Bimbo Coles has one and Coles endured two down years in his final two seasons in orange and maroon.

With the senior scoring 29 points on the night, he’s all but locked up the National Scoring Title as well. Green is averaging 24.9 points per game this season. The next closest competitor is “MoMo” Jones (former VT Commit by the way) who is averaging 23 ppg. With that wide of a gap, Green needs to score just 10 points or more in his final two games to clinch that title. That is unless Jones goes off for 40-plus in his final games. That is unlikely though.

The Hokies have a tough matchup with Duke at Cameron Indoor on Tuesday before traveling to Wake Forest on Sunday. After that, all that’s left of this 2012-2013 season is the ACC tournament, which begins Thursday March 14th.
