Wow! I really did not see that coming. Georgia Southern entered Saturday’s game with a 3-5 record, which includes a 17 point loss to fellow ACC’er Maryland in November. However, the Eagles just flat outplayed the Hokies on their home floor and exited with a five point victory over Jame Johnson’s squad.
The Hokies battled in this one but found themselves in a 16 point hole midway through the 2nd half. Poor rebounding, poor defensive effort, and just all-around poor shooting really hampered this Virginia Tech team. Erick Green led the way, again, with 28 points. To be honest, Green was the only one who could get his shot to fall but even he went 0-4 from behind the arc.
As a team, the Hokies shot just 6-27 from long range with all six of those made three’s coming in the 2nd half. Tech went to halftime 0-9 from distance.
"It was just one of those nights," Virginia Tech coach James Johnson said. "I was fearful that we would have one of those. We were shooting the basketball so well, and I was just fearful that one of those nights was going to come. When that happens, you've got to be strong on the defensive end of the floor, and those guys made shots. I thought a lot of those shots were contested, but they made them.
After Virginia Tech’s stunning 10 point win over then 15th ranked Oklahoma State, the wheels have begun to fall off the Virginia Tech bus. Teams now have film on what the Hokies want to do and their defensive effort hasn’t improved like I had originally hoped. If Tech continues to struggle with interior rebounding, defensive pressure, and poor shot selection then this team’s ceiling will come crashing down on them in a heartbeat.
Hopefully, these last few games prove to be nothing more than a bump in the road for this group. But with a good Bradley team coming up this week, Tech will need to find a quick cure for their current ailments.
With the loss, the Hokies are now 8-2 on the season.
