Freshman redshirts?
Of the newcomers I am very impressed with Joshua Sanford’s hands and feet. After Roberts he has been a bright spot at WR. Some of the experienced WR’s are not stepping up at all, concerned with DJ out- not looking good. So far Chris Magnus looks a bit quicker and surer of himself than Trey Edmonds but the real test will be against a live defense. On defense Dewayne Alford is turning some heads with his quickness and physicality, a guy nobody has talked about?
Alford is such a humble and nice kid too. You almost have to pull for him and hope he succeeds during his stay in Blacksburg. We have a lot of depth at defensive end and that’s a good problem to have. I like where Justin Taylor is at right now. He actually slimmed down a bit over the summer and looks more toned. He’s a pass rusher so we can’t let him get too heavy.
As for Mangus and Edmonds, depending on how they do over the next few weeks, I just envision both redshirting this year. One of them may travel as an emergency player but I would prefer to redshirt both. You have to weigh them leaving early, how much they can help us this year, and how much they could help us during their 5th year in 2016.
Just looking over our list of recruits…….where do you think Seth Dooley will turn out? He seems to be big and pretty fast for his size (similar 40 time to Ekanem and Edmunds). TE? DE? I don’t remember reading much about him this last year……
Seth is greyshirting but he may get a look at TE first. I’ve heard that he’s added a bit of weight and is up to 240 pounds, which is good. He played at about 215 during his senior year.
He’s a guy that’s going to need some time to develop but he’ll be able to come in and compete during the spring, redshirt, and will have a chance to get some playing time as a redshirt freshman as a backup.
what have you seen from Joel Caleb and Ken Ekanem?
Joel is going to be a beast but I want to see what happens when the lights come on. Those two scrimmages will be big for him. As for Ekanem, he’s going to redshirt. But, he’s already significantly bigger than most of our former defensive ends. Give him a couple years in the weight room and the sky is the limit. I’m really, really excited about these two guys.
