Screen shot 2012 08 19 at 11.54.03 AM 2012 Numerical Roster Countdown: #9 Randall DunnWith 9 days left until the Virginia Tech Hokies face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, we turn our attention to #9 on roster Mr. Randall Dunn. Earlier this month, I wrote an article talking about how Dunn could be the weapon we’ve been missing in our passing game. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a tight end that could stretch the field and Dunn certainly has that potential. However, it looks like Tech could go with a more tight end by committee approach, which would limit his snaps and his amount of targets in the passing game.

The Scoop

Height: 6’2”
Weight: 240 lbs
Position: Tight End
Year: R-Senior
High School: Ocean Lakes High School

How Did He Get Here?

Dunn wasn’t a highly ranked kid out of Ocean Lakes but he did boast an impressive offer list with scholarships from the likes of Penn State, UNC, UCONN, West Virginia, UVA, and Virginia Tech. With his teammate, Marcus Davis, on board already in the 2008 class, the Hokies led for Randall Dunn all the way up until the end. He committed to the Hokies on Signing Day in 2008.

2011 Season Rewind

While 2011 wasn’t the breakout year I was hoping for from Dunn, he still managed to catch his first career touchdown pass against Appalachian State. Dunn only tallied 68 snaps on offense last season. Hopefully he’ll see a little more action here in his final season.

2012 Prediction

If you wanted to me to list out the current tight end depth chart I’m not sure I could do it. Eric Martin has been our most solid option but he’s not a great receiver. Dunn is our best receiving option but he’s not big enough to be a blocker. Ryan Malleck is our best all-around tight end but he’s inconsistent. I think you get the point. Everybody at this position has a strength to their game and a weakness.

With Bryan Stinespring implementing more pistol formation into our gameplan, I would like to see Dunn used more out of that set. The only downside is, you would have to rely on Dunn to block at times and it just depends on the matchup he has with that particular team. It may be tougher for him to do that against Georgia Tech than it is against Bowling Green just from a size differential. Still, I’m hoping Dunn can find is way onto the field often enough to develop into a threat in our passing game this season.

Completely Made Up Fact

Randall Dunn was once asked for an autograph because a fan thought he was Ronnie Dunn of the hit country music group Brooks & Dunn. After that fiasco, Randall will never visit the state of Alabama ever again.
