Screen shot 2012 08 09 at 8.24.44 PM 2012 Numerical Roster Countdown: #21 Brenden MotleyWith 21 days left until the Virginia Tech Hokies face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, we turn our attention to one of our newest incoming freshmen Mr. Brenden Motley. The Christiansburg star will begin his career as a quarterback and with our depth chart at the position, he’ll likely have to stay there for the duration of his career. Motley boasts a strong arm but his inexperience in a detailed passing system will hinder his development. Motley ran an old-school wing-T offense in high school so he’ll need to adjust to the passing game at the college level.

The Scoop

Height: 6’3”
Weight: 207 lbs
Position: Quarterback
Year: Freshman
High School: Christiansburg High School

How Did He Get Here?

Motley wasn’t highly recruited but he did hold offers from Georgia Tech and UVA along with the schollie from Virginia Tech. The Hokies, though, were too tough to beat here since his family lives in the New River Valley. Tech won this recruiting battle, landing a verbal pledge from Motley on June 22nd 2011.

2011 Season Rewind

Despite running an option offense, Motley still threw for 951 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. He added 646 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns on the ground en route to becoming a 1st team selection on the All-State team by Virginia Preps.

2012 Prediction

Obviously, the Hokies are going to redshirt Motley this season barring an emergency situation at quarterback. The good news is he’ll have time this season to get some work in on the scout team, adjust to college life, and work on his mechanics before entering next spring as the potential backup at quarterback if Logan Thomas goes pro.

When you watch his film, Motley flashes some ability to be a very good division one passer. He’s not going to be Logan Thomas or Tyrod Taylor by any stretch, at least not immediately. But he has poise and the ability to shuffle his feet, scramble, and make people miss. He also shows good touch on a few of his passes, which is a little surprising for a quarterback in that offense. Hopefully, Motley can develop quickly so I don’t have to sweat an injury to Mark Leal next year.

Completely Made Up Fact

Since graduation in June, Motley has spent the rest of the summer crashing weddings with fellow freshman JC Coleman. Unlike the actual movie, they realized most girls at weddings aren’t as attractive. So, they decided to start crashing funerals instead.

So whats the scoop on this Charley Meyer kid? Any chance he works himself into some PT anytime soon? Or is this another case of good scrimage plays not leading to any time on the field (Beiro, Dyer, DiNardo, etc.) except for some ST snaps?

Aso sounds like Stanford is really showing some skills. Great to see we found another sleeper! What do you see the depth chart looking like at this point?

I am starting to be much less worried about WR for many years to come!

I have a post coming up either tonight or tomorrow (depends on when I have a chance to work on it but yea, Meyer was one I was interested in seeing play this fall. Although, I will admit I didn’t think he would impress this much this early. We have another walk-on at WR, Malcolm Westbrook who you’ll hear from in a few years as well. This 2012 group is very, very good.

Does anyone else think Motley looks alot like Method Man?

Why not try Motley in the secondary like many people have suggested? DO we rally need him on the depth chart at QB? It really looks like Leal is the future QB until Parker and Hodges get up to speed. It also seems like Gresh and Rody can fill in as needed for the 3rd string. To keep Motley around just for scout team assisgnments, seems like a waste of talent.

Actually, yes it is and you’re selling him short on his potential as a QB. Could he end up as a WR or FS, yes. But, we’re thin at QB and just imagine if Logan leaves after this year.

Next year our depth chart could be:
1. Mark Leal (R-Jr)
2. Brenden Motley (R-Fr)
3. Carlis Parker (T-Fr)
4. Bucky Hodges (T-Fr)
5. Trey Gresh (R-Jr)
6. Brian Rody (R-So)

Hodges and Parker need redshirt years so it’s crucial that Motley develop as quickly as possible. Plus, it gives us another option going forward and it always pays to have quality depth at QB.

Motley will be key in helping this team prepare for GT. He ran the triple option in high school. He has good speed and is actually a bigger version of Tevin Washington.

Torn ACL for Acree, is the word I am hearing……..man, that sucks. It was sounding like he was turning a corner. I assume he can’t get a medical hardship waiver since its his first injury?

How does this leave our depth?

Bummer.

Is it the same one he tore in HS?

he’s already redshirted so he can’t take a medical redshirt … to answer your question about depth, in a few years, it is really going to suck

I’m very concerned about the o-line this year and years to come, Tech has missed on alot of recruits and we have reached on a few prospects who will need 3-4 years before contributing. We need to really go after the PA prospect who decommited from Penn St , hopefully we sign 2 more o-lineman we don’t need all these DB’s we have committed, it doesn’t make sense You win up front
