With 19 days left until the Virginia Tech Hokies face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, we turn our attention to #19 on roster Mr. Kevin Asante. Our coaches love Asante and judging by his play this past spring, he’ll be in a position to earn some playing time this fall. Obviously, he’s battling a lot of other talented players but he does have the speed the coaches are looking for. His size is a bit of a downside but that can be overcome. This Saturday’s open scrimmage will likely decide whether or not the North Carolina native will see playing time this year or not.
The Scoop
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 181 lbs
Position: Wide Receiver
Year: R-Freshman
High School: Mallard Creek High School
How Did He Get Here?
The Hokies heavily recruited Marquise Williams out of Mallard Creek but failed to land the four star prospect. They did unearth one of his top receivers and wound up receiving a commitment from Asante on November 19th, 2010. Virginia Tech was his only offer.
2011 Season Rewind
Asante redshirted in 2011.
2012 Prediction
Kevin Sherman has the difficult task of trying to find a 4th, 5th, and 6th receiver this year before we start prepping for Georgia Tech in two weeks. Add in a lingering injury to D.J. Coles and Sherman may have went from having the easiest job amongst the VT coaches to one of the hardest. The good news is he does have a lot of young talent developing but they’re just that; young. Look for Sherman to take a long look at guys like Asante, Joel Caleb, Josh Stanford, Christian Reeves, and Demetri Knowles this Saturday.
Back to Asante, this Saturday will be crucial for him to establish himself on the depth chart going forward. The Hokies will lose four senior wide receivers this year so three starting jobs will be wide open next spring. Asante could end up filling one of those spots if he can impress Sherman enough this fall. But, he needs to have a good scrimmage on Saturday, catch a few passes, and show off that speed of his that sets him apart from the rest. Minus Demetri Knowles, who’s the fastest player on the team.
Completely Made Up Fact
Asante was born in Brooklyn, New York so I assume that he knows Jay-Z.

Justin what is the depth chart for flanker and split end? Also any chance we slide Dunn over to fill in for Coles if he is injured for much longer? Sounds like Meyer is playing himself into a scholarship, when is the earliest he could earn one and what class would he count towards. I heard a rumor the honey badger might visit Blacksburg, any truth there? If so, when is he eligible? Are we still being considered by Dorian Johnson? Sorry a bunch of questions all came up at once
Haha, it’s cool. As for the Honey Badger there is no truth to that because he would still have to sit out a year. If he could play right away then I suppose it could be an option (he is a talented player) but there’s no truth to that report.
The current depth chart at split end: Davis, Roberts, Stanford, Caleb, Reeves, Smiling
The current depth chart at flanker: Coles, Knowles, Meyer, Asante,
Most of those guys are versatile though and can play either spot.
Meyer is probably a preferred walk-on so he could find himself on scholarship next spring if he’s in the two-deep. Beamer likes to reward his top walk-ons with scholarships when possible.
We’re still trying to set up a visit with Johnson but he seems to want to stay closer to home. If we can swing a visit though then anything can happen but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
it’s fluid, but I believe the latest depth chart is…
SE: Roberts/Coles, Fuller, Stanford
FL: Davis, Asante/Knowles, Meyer/Caleb (signs pointing to Meyer at this point)
