Picture 3 2012 Numerical Roster Countdown: #92 Luther MaddyWith 92 days remaining until we kickoff the 2012 season, we turn our attention to #92 on roster Mr. Luther Maddy.  Maddy was thrust into action last fall after Antoine Hopkins tore his ACL and played effectively for a true freshmen.  Obviously, he does need to improve his strength but that will come in time.  As for his skillset, Maddy has the potential to be one of the most effective defensive tackles we’ve ever had here at Virginia Tech.  To my knowledge, not many before him have grasped the system this quick and become a playmaker as a true sophomore.  Maddy is special and he is set for a big year in 2012.

The Scoop

Height: 6’1”
Weight: 288 lbs
Position: Defensive Tackle
Year: Sophomore
High School: Atlantic High School

How Did He Get Here?

The 2011 class was a disappointing class for Virginia Tech fans.  Not only did the Hokies miss out of a trio of talented linebackers in the Hokies own backyard, but the class faltered down the stretch.  However, there was a silverlining to the ending of the class and that silverlining resided in Delray Beach, Florida.  Luther Maddy and Dadi Nicolas were offered after the Hokies failed to land a few of their higher ranked targets and you have to admit that the Hokies were very lucky to land both of those prospects.  Maddy was an under the radar recruit with offers from Western Michigan, Florida Atlantic, FIU, and a few others.  But, he committed to Virginia Tech after the Hokies officially offered him on February 1st, 2011.

2011 Season Rewind

Maddy was forced into action last season and held his own for a true freshman.  Not many freshmen can step in and actually become a playmaker in their first year on the field but Maddy was able to record 19 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack on the year.

2012 Prediction

There are going to be a bunch of different combinations on the defensive line this fall.  The Hokies will use a 4-DE set against spread teams in certain situations.  You’ll also see some sort of 3 DE, 1 DT hybrid set that we’ll use against Georgia Tech in week one.  But, the one thing we do know is that all of the defensive tackles in the two-deep will play a lot this fall.

Maddy probably isn’t going to start this fall if Antoine Hopkins returns to full strength.  However, if Hopkins doesn’t return to his oldself then I could see Maddy being the starter alongside Derrick Hopkins for most of the season.  If that is the case then you would have to expect Maddy to have a lucrative season statistically in 2012.

Completely Made Up Fact

Being a frequent visitor to the Blacksburg Cookout, the restaurant has decided to name a cheeseburger after him.  The "Mad Burger" features Lettuce, Onion, Tomato, Hot Sauce, Ketchup, and a the souls of all the quarterbacks Maddy has sacked over the years.

I doubt it. We really don’t have any room to offer anyone new for the 2013 class unless we really want to add another OL.

No. It wasn’t a very big camp. There were some 2014 and 2015 kids that stood out but we’re still doing a lot of evaluating in those classes right now. July is going to be a big camp with the way everything is shaping up.

If so, then it must be true (sarcasm). He’s not going to commit until August at the earliest and more than likely January so there’s no way you can point him to one school. But, do you really think his parents are going to let him go to Clemson? Yea, let’s spurn the school that turned Vinny into an NFL starter for 8 years, Corey into a potentially reliable receiver, and Kyle into a 1st round pick. Yea, that makes sense.

Someone was on here or another site last year saying they heard from a reliable source in Joel Caleb’s HS that Joel was going to Ohio State and had verbally committed to them. Kids are all full of shit.

I live in Baltimore and Fuller is not going to clemson. I know somebody who has a kid that goes to Good counsil and says he wears Tech cloths the most and thinks he commits maybe this summer to Tech.
