The Hokies added three new freshmen to their roster this spring, two of which hailed from the 2012 class and have enrolled early while one greyshirted from 2011 and enrolled a semester late. We’ve already talked in detail about JC Coleman and what he’ll bring to this offense this spring. He’s a smaller, shiftier running back that should see the field immediately this spring if he can pick up the playbook and do all the little things needed for freshmen to play in year one.
The other two recruits that joined Coleman on campus yesterday were Dwayne Alford and Donaldven Manning. Alford was a 2011 commit that chose to greyshirt to help his development. He’ll start off this spring at defensive end and likely battle Dadi Nicolas, Matt Roth, Zack McCray, Duan Perez-Means, and Justin Taylor for a spot on the depth chart. However, all signs indicate that Alford will likely redshirt this upcoming season baring an injury or two.

Lastly, there is Donaldven Manning who gave some Tech fans a scare by taking all of his visits this fall. Still, Manning stayed true to his word and enrolled at Virginia Tech on time. Manning is true talent out of Miami, Florida and he could join Coleman in playing this fall.
Right now, the depth chart at cornerback is fairly unsettled. With Jayron Hosley opting for the NFL, Tech will return Kyle Fuller at boundary corner and will likely start either Kyshoen Jarrett or Detrick Bonner at field corner. That leaves one spot open for Manning, James Farrow, Davion Tookes, or walk-on Carl Jackson. My guess is that it will come down to a Manning versus Farrow battle.
All I can say is that I’m happy to finally have these three guys on campus. Alford will be a solid option in the future at defensive end as he continues to develop and Coleman and Manning give us more options that our coaches can use at their respective positions this season. Welcome to Hokie Nation guys!
