With 5 days left until Virginia Tech takes the field against Appalachian State, we turn our attention to one of our true freshmen on roster, Mr. Kyshoen Jarrett. Jarrett was recently named to our dress squad, which means he is going to forgo a redshirt year and play as a backup this fall. Jarrett has been impressive throughout this fall camp. He has excellent hips, quick feet, and plenty of playmaking ability. Right now, Jarrett is looking like another great Virginia Tech cornerback.
Weight: 193 lbs
High School: East Stroudsburg High School
How Did He Get Here
The Coaching Carousal often helps Virginia Tech land a few recruits every now and then. It certainly helped us last season when Jarrett decommited from Pitt after Dave Wannstedt was fired. With spots dwindling, Jarrett didn’t take much time to verbal to the Hokies. He gave his pledge on December 21st 2010.
Also of note, Jarrett will wear number 34 this year, not number five. The reason he’s number five in our countdown is because of Ricardo Young’s transfer to New Mexico State. So, just a heads up there.
Jarrett was named Mountain Valley Conference’s Most Valuable Player as a senior at East Stroudsburg. He finished the season with 36 tackles and four interceptions on defense while adding 1,200 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns on offense.
Right now, I have Jarrett tied with Detrick Bonner on the depth chart at boundary corner. That may change in the upcoming days when Tech releases their most up to date depth chart. Still, Jarrett playing well enough to spurn a redshirt year is a positive sign, especially since we’re already deep at the cornerback position. My guess is Torian Gray will look to get Jarrett some reps during some of our out of conference games and decide whether or not he’s ready for the ACC slate.
If not, then Gray can go with Bonner as the backup at boundary corner for the remainder of the season and reopen the competition for the starting job in the spring. However, if Jarrett impresses then the Hokies might have just found their next starting cornerback.
