With 29 days left until Virginia Tech takes the field against Appalachian State, we turn our attention to one of our new true freshmen, Mr. Corey Marshall. If you’re looking for who the top prospect was in this past 2011 recruiting class, look no further than Mr. Marshall. Simply put, he’s a prototypical Virginia Tech defensive lineman. Right now, Marshall is a bit of a tweener but he’ll start his career at defensive end for the Hokies. He could move inside after a year or two in the weight room. However, I wouldn’t be shocked if he turns into another Jim Davis and becomes that combo player Bud Foster has lacked over the last few years.

Position: Defensive End
Year: Freshman
High School: Dinwiddie High School

How Did He Get Here

The Dinwiddie star announced his decision live on Comcast last summer and wound up choosing the Hokies in a close race over in-state rival UVA. The former four star recruit held offers from Tech, UVA, Michigan, Tennessee, West Virginia, NC State, Georgia Tech, UCONN, and plenty of others.

2010 Season

Marshall was a senior at Dinwiddie High School last season and racked up some impressive stats as a defensive end. He finished the year with 122 tackles, 27 for loss, 13.5 sacks, 19 QB hurries, and six forced fumbles.

2011 Prospectus

Odds are, Marshall will be one of the incoming freshmen that spurn a redshirt year and contributes to the team this fall. However, just how much he contributes depends on how quickly he learns the system and whether or not a few other players step it up once practice begins in August. Marshall is slated to be a defensive end and could help out on either side. I see him as more of a STUD DE at this point but with James Gayle starting there, he’ll have to battle with backups Zack McCray and Tyrel Wilson for playing time.

There is a chance that Marshall could redshirt, especially if McCray improves this fall and claims that backup job. That would be in everybody’s best interest but if Marshall can help this team out, then he should play. Needless to say, Marshall’s play during the two open scrimmages will be on the primary things I’ll be watching on those two Saturdays.

Career Highlight

Getting to announce his decision live on Comcast. That had to be a lot of fun for a 17 year old kid.

Completely made up fact

There were a lot of apologies this morning after a hazing ritual gone wrong. Most of the upper-classman forgot to untie Corey Marshall from the goalpost in Lane Stadium after practice.
