With 25 days left until Virginia Tech takes the field against Appalachian State, we turn our attention to one of our new true freshmen on roster, Mr. Kris Harley. If there’s one person from this 2011 recruiting class that’s almost guaranteed to play this fall, it’s Harley. The Warren Central graduate has entered Tech at a good weight and is very similar in build to that of Derrick Hopkins at this point in time. He still needs some time in the weight room but that will come in time. Also, he’ll have to go through a crash course of technique work and he'll have to continue learning the playbook but that comes with the territory for freshman who are needed right away. If Harley holds his own, I think he will likely earn that final spot in the two deep at defensive tackle.
Stats
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 290 lbs
Position: Defensive Tackle
Year: Freshman
High School: Warren Central High School
How Did He Get Here
While he wasn’t the highest ranked recruit in last years class, Harley probably boasted the most impressive offer list with scholarships from Cincinnati, Iowa, Michigan, Stanford, USC, Nebraska, UNC, Oklahoma, Illinois, Indiana, Wake Forest, and plenty more. Needless to say, Harley could have gone just about anywhere he wanted to. Instead, he decided to follow the path set by Darren Evans and enroll here at Virginia Tech.
2010 Season
Harley finished his senior season with 46 tackles, seven of those for loss, and six sacks.
2011 Prospectus
The Warren Central grad has been impressive in camp so far but as a freshman, you have to wonder if he’ll hit that wall that most freshmen hit in regards to all the information they have to learn in such a short period of time. If he can avoid hitting that wall and continues to improve with every rep, Harley will be Tech’s 4th defensive tackle this fall. If not, then he could always take a redshirt year and use it to get bigger, stronger, and faster by the start of next fall. With the Hokies losing one of their backups at defensive tackle after this season, the 3rd and 4th defensive tackle spots will be wide open when the Hokies open up spring practice in 2012.
Career Highlight
Picking Virginia Tech over that list of suitors. Best move you’ve ever made big guy!
Career Lowlight
Finishing 8-2 his senior year and not being able to defend their 2009-2010 State Championship.
Look A-Like
Completely made up fact
In order to prepare for this upcoming season, Harley hired this guy as his personal trainer.

I hear that Luther Maddy has passed Kris Harley in terms of possibly playing this year. Is this true? Is it a technique thing or playbook thing? Maddy may end up being the biggest steal in this class!
Are you going to report on the mini-scrimmage?
Maddy is the most instinctive DL we’ve had in the past five seasons. He is going to be an absolute beast once he gets in the weight room and can improve his strength. That and his lack of knowledge of our “system” is the only thing that’s holding him back. As far as his place on the depth chart, he’s still tied with Harley but today’s mini-scrimmage will decide a lot. Most of the younger guys will participate in this one and the coaches will make some decisions after today.
Also, yes I will be at the scrimmage on Saturday with my notebook and I’ll have a post on it Saturday night.
What about the mini-scrimage today? Can anyone go? When will we hear reports?
Scrimmage was today at 6 pm it appears. Reports are leaking out now so check your usual sites and no it was not open to either the media or fans. So, info will be limited.
