With 23 days left until Virginia Tech takes the field against Appalachian State, we turn our attention to one of our new true freshmen on roster, Mr. Demetri Knowles. Knowles has been impressive since arriving here on campus but at just 167 pounds, the Lynchburg native will need to transform his body from a track and field body to a football body before he’ll see much playing time. With a likely redshirt year upcoming, Knowles will have plenty of time to hit the weight room and tack on ten pounds or so by the start of spring practice. Still, with his blazing speed, Knowles is a name to remember for next season.
Weight: 167 lbs
Position: Wide Receiver
High School: Liberty Christian High School
How Did He Get Here
Credit the staff for finding Knowles in a place Frank Beamer knows best; the rough. Knowles didn’t see his stock take off until later on in his senior season when UVA, UCONN, and Virginia Tech extended scholarship offers. He took a few officials and eventually committed to the Hokies on January 7th, 2011.
Knowles finished his senior season with 25 receptions for 338 yards and six touchdowns.
The Hokies are stacked at wide receiver this season with three seniors and two juniors occupying the top five on the depth chart. Still, Coach Stinespring mentioned after the first few days of practice that he wants a sixth receive to step up and give the Hokies a solidified two deep. Right now, E.L. Smiling is the odds on favorite to win that spot but Knowles is a guy to watch in this race. Knowles is a burner that still needs to improve his route running and focus on the little things a little more. However, there’s no denying the speed he brings to the table. If he can learn enough of the offense within the next week or so, then he might be able to spurn a redshirt and play this fall. If not, then Knowles can spend this fall on the scout team and focus on getting bigger, faster, and stronger heading into next spring.
Winning a state title in the 100m as a senior.

Being rated as the 183rd best WR in the country by Scout.com. I doubt there are 183 kids better than Knowles.
Completely made up fact
Knowles often outruns his own shadow when doing sprints. Then again, his shadow is an obese man so that’s really no surprise.
