With 14 days left until Virginia Tech takes the field against Appalachian State, we turn our attention to number 14 on roster, Mr. Dominique Patterson. Patterson spent his first season at WHIP Linebacker but struggled some, especially in coverage. With depth issues at running back, the coaches moved the King’s Fork product over to the offensive side of the ball. At 236 pounds, Patterson could be a force in the running game but so far, an ankle injury has kept him from practicing. If he makes an appearance at today’s scrimmage I’ll be sure to note it in my recap tonight.
Weight: 236 lbs
Position: Running Back
High School: King’s Fork High School
How Did He Get Here
Patterson was a kid who flew under the radar for some reason. According to Rivals.com, he only held one offer from Virginia Tech and decided to accept that scholarship offer after attending the Hokies July recruiting camp. Patterson committed to Tech on July 13th 2009.
Today’s scrimmage is huge for a lot of guys on the cut line this season. After today, the depth chart will need to be finalized and a two deep will need to be settled. That’s why if Patterson can scrimmage today, it will at least give him a chance to beat out Tony Gregory or Michael Holmes for that third running back spot on the depth chart. If not, the Patterson might have to wait until the spring to show off his skill set.
With his struggles at linebacker, I like the move over the running back. Depending on how this year goes, we don’t know what’s in store for David Wilson so having a player switch over to running back and spend this year learning the position is a smart move by the staff. I like what Patterson brings to the table but hopefully he can get some carries today just for the reps. Even if he doesn’t win that third spot, getting reps today will make him a better player in the future.

Completely Made up Fact
Patterson founded the "Suffolk Barbershop Quartet" while working at a local barbershop during high school. However, his group lost to these guys at Barbershop Quartet Nationals.
