college football rankings Surfing the Pre Season Top 25s: Where the Hokies Are RankedWe are so close to college football season that I can smell it.  I just hope I can make it to the final sprint.  I've tried recently to feed my football fix with NFL pre-season, and I don't recommend it.  Its gosh-awful.

If you want to hit the blogs and pre-season publications, then that's a different story.  There's plenty out there to absorb.  Now that the USA Today Coaches Top 25 Pre-Season poll is out, as well as the AP Top 25, you can dive into rankings analysis ad nausea as well.  You'd be surprised how many preseason polls there are out there.  This post has a links to a bunch so you can see where the Hokies rank.

Interestingly enough, if you Google 'college football top 25', the first one that comes up is the top 25 ranking at about.com.  Its done by some their fairly non-descript analyst.  He has the Hokies #8, and sure enough, Boise St is #1.

Athlon Sports has been up and down in regards to its respect for Virginia Tech over the years, but is a great site to bookmark.  They have the Hokies at #10.

Those who read this blog know that CollegeFootballNews.com is my favorite site for CFB coverage, you can lose hours of your day there reading content.  They pre-season rank 120 teams, and have Virginia Tech at #9 (though their analysis seems way off to me - "relative weakness is wide receiver"???)

SportingNews.com also does at top 100, though with much less analysis.  The Hokies at #12.  One of the factoids up front is that 4 ACC Coastal teams are in Top 25.

NationalChamps.Net is a bit of a clunky site, but they have a ranking with VT at #14.  Both Georgia Tech and Penn State are ahead of the Hokies.

Personally, I think Virginia Tech is well position going into the season.  You want your highest ranking to be in the coaches poll, because its the one that counts in the BCS formula.  But I'd say Virginia Tech is flying relatively under the pre-season hype radar, as there is much more talk about teams like Bama, Ohio State, Florida, and Texas, which to me is good.  Their mega opening game at FedEx will be more about Boise State than about Virginia Tech.

Hang on until Sept 2.
