Today, pictures leaked over twitter showing Bruce Taylor wearing the Hokies new black Nike Pro-Combat jerseys that Tech will wear against Boise State on Monday. The jersey is very similar to the all-white Pro-Combat jersey's Tech wore last year against Maryland. However, this year's edition includes an orange stripe on each shoulder and what is rumored to be numbers on the side of the shoulder pads. Tech will also wear a black helmet along with black pants and black shoes when they take the field on Monday. The full jersey combination will be unveiled on Wednesday September 1st in Blacksburg.
Boise State is also supposed to don a Pro-Combat jersey this year but I haven't been able to confirm whether or not they will be wearing theirs in this game. From a recruiting standpoint, it's always nice to be one of the select NIKE schools to wear these new uniforms. Kids love jerseys and I've seen plenty of kids reference the color and design of our uniform as one reason why they are interested in Virginia Tech.
However, the fans seem to be split on whether or not they approve of this jersey change for Virginia Tech. Black jersey's as well as Tech's dreaded orange jersey has been a hot button topic for some seeing that black isn't an official color at Tech and orange is associated with some tough losses in the past.

To me, these jersey's are ok. I think they'll look better when the players get some pads underneath them so I'll really hold off on my final judgement until pictures emerge on September 1st.
That's all I got. Leave us a comment below and let us know if you approve or disprove of this one-time jersey shakeup.

Our colors are Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange. You see black mentioned there anywhere?
All I’m saying is that theses jerseys are cool and everything but on a National Stage like against Boise St. I would like Tech to rep the schools colors. Save this Nike jerseys for like our Thurs Night game against Georgia Tech and have a blackout even though its suppose to be maroon effect that game.
That’s a good idea, maybe even move it to Duke or Wake Forest. Hell, I mean we wore the Pro Combats last year at Maryland. NIKE makes the decisions though so I guess this is what they wanted.
this isn’t us letting nike make decisions for us… its a special crazy event, why not support it with some crazy jersey? White isnt an official school color either but thats not a problem when we implement it in our jerseys. Its not like were trying to rep black as a school color its just to accent the others. I think the orange and maroon looks alot better against black than white at least…
Has this been confirmed anywhere (other than the fact that the players apparently have access) that these will be the Boise jerseys? Beamerball.com stated a couple months back we’d be wearing the maroon tops with white pants.
Yes it has. The VT bookstore has a flier up that says “Look Like the Team” then on the next line it says “Fedex Field Virginia Tech vs Boise State”
You can view that link here: http://www.bookstore.vt.edu/ePOS?this_category=1219&store=109&form=shared3%2fgm%2fmain.html&design=109&__session_info__=1dBzlqQXUEuMtZP8mIYUWkPsRhB7mkx3c9%2fZnt0p%2b%2bQGc6Pp3Cd07ptAgN%2fgLQ%2b7WqPxVlWp6YfK1FR7ai7WGypOMomTxCYqdcAXfwUKyZYKbFsMYys6yA%3d%3d
These jerseys and the whole Uni look so cool all together with pads, and umm Black and grey were the original school colors so dont whine about the colore scheme it still has marron and orange, the computer circuit design in the stripes and numbers are so cool we will look scary against Boise state in these i can’t wait to buy one of these jerseys!
I think these are ridiculously sick looking. they are a lot better than last years and the all black look is so nice. the helmets look like they will be a flat black with maroon stripe which looks real nice. i think reppin sweet unis in the national spotlight is a great idea. shows how big football is to us. its just one more thing to up the hype for next monday
I’m old school and love our orange and maroon…but WOW… they are going to look so intimidating entering the stadium to Enter Sandman in these Uni’s…I can’t wait to see em…GO HOKIES !!!!!
Oh, cmon Tony!!
Virginia Tech is better than that! As an Alabama fan, I expect this kind of behavior from Georgia but not VT. Georgia’s black unis were supposed to be SO scary and intimidating for Alabama-we beat them 41-30 (and it was WAY more embarrassing than the final score indicates!). I don’t like Beamer trying to use gimmicks…stick to running the ball and good defense and you guys will do just fine.
I’m a Georgia fan and I was at that Blackout game in Athens (sitting in the Alabama section wearing my black “Beat Alabama” t-shirt…that sure wasn’t a fun night). Alabama dominated the entire first half and put the game out of reach quickly. An absolute failed attempt at pulling a stunt for intimidation.
But the blackout theme seemed to help pump the players and fans up in the Auburn game the previous year. At least black is an official color of the Bulldogs.
In my personal opinion and experiences, the Blackout stunt is bad luck. From the 2008 Bama/Dawgs game to Virginia Tech basketball games, to every basketball, football, and volleyball game they have tried to do it at the college I am currently attending (school colors are red, white, and blue)…it just seems to bring bad luck.
I think its completely stupid. We are on college football’s big stage that night, promote your image with all maroon.
Nike is obviously calling the shots and there must be a lot of money involved.
Haven’t submitted anything in a while but I think this is a major dissapointment. I wish our uniforms were as steady as our program has been. I work for a marketing company and VT’s brand continues to be lost, year after year, with the introduction of dumb stuff like this. Are we the new hip kids or are we the steady program that speaks through championships instead of uniforms? We need to get the old school uni’s, the ones that I’ll assume we’re going to be wearing all season long, and never touch them again except for slight updates. They look like the uniforms that a traditionally powerful football team would wear. If we start losing alot of football games and need an image revamp, then fine. For now, I’m not a fan of them.
I’m hoping we keep the throwbacks as our regular home/away jerseys for at least the next few years. That will allow kids and fans to associate us with one specific jersey.
However, being one the teams that NIKE chooses to do this with shows how far we’ve come as a program. I have no problem wearing something like this once a year, as long as we still get to wear our regular jerseys at home and on the road. Hell, these things will look beautiful and if dominate Boise State for four quarters.
How old are you? This is how we get good recruits and get people excited and get revenue from selling new jerseys…and how many championships have we won with the other uniforms? Yeah none…
OMG!!!! This is BUTT UGLY, why not all Maroon? This is worse than the all electric orange back in Maurice DeShazo’s fumblerooski loss the gay french in Lane!!!!
Tell me it Ain’t so!
These could be the ugliest things I’ve ever seen. By far and away uglier than the unis we were for the UVA game last year. Why can’t we just keep it simple? No need for the design in the numbers. Just color those in, keep the simple maroon jerseys with the orange and white stripes on the shoulders and call it a day. This is just atrocious to the game of football.
People, it doesnt matter what uniform we wear. When it comes down to it what really matters is if you got game! I think the Uniforms worn by TEch last year for the UVA and Maryland game are one of the nicest uniforms Ive seen Tech has worn. I like them better than the black ones above, but think these are pretty neat too. Go Hokies!
Im mostly a Bama fan, but I follow Va Tech too since some of my family went there. Personally, I think these gimicky things like black uniforms is a bad idea. What it often tells the opposing team and fans is that you are not confident and need a gimick to try and motivate the team. And THAT can get the opposing team more pumped up. I HATE gimicks like this, and hope Bama never gets that desperate. Besides, more times than not, it backfires.
Uhhh, hate to tell you but Ala got gimmicky as well.

You will see the new uniform Alabama wears only has a few minor changes…programs that actually win championships do not need to pull these stunts to get recruits or hype fans up.
Hiring Nick Saban was a gimmick. Frank Beamer (Class of ’69) has been coaching us since ’87,
Come’on guys! Do your research! These uniforms are amazing and like Chris said, black and grey were our original colors. This is not really something that we have to choose, Nike is doing this to a hand full of teams to give them a 1 game day new uniform. Nike said in the article, “Select teams will feature Nike Pro Combat System of Dress during key games on 2010 football season schedule” Obviously Boise State is really our only key game therefore, the Nike Pro will be featured during the game. Since Boise doesn’t really have a key game in the future, I would be surprised if Nike is having them where their new Jersey on the same day.
Article Below:
Ten of the top college football programs have been selected to wear uniquely designed Nike uniforms for at least one game during the 2010 season the company announced today.
The University of Alabama, Boise State University, University of Florida, University of Miami (FL), The Ohio State University, Oregon State University, University of Pittsburgh, Texas Christian University, Virginia Tech and West Virginia University will wear the innovative designs for a minimum of one game on their schedules. The dates of those games will be announced at the unveiling of the uniforms Sept. 1 in New York.
The Nike Pro Combat System of Dress uniforms the schools will wear are engineered to provide superior protection and durability, while utilizing advanced fabrics and tooling that reduce weight.
Nike worked diligently with each university to bring relevant elements of the school’s rich heritage into the futuristic elite fit uniform designs. The collaborations with the universities produced the highly customized uniforms that will be revealed just days prior to the start of the 2010 college football season.
I am so sorry that Tech has succumbed to the politics of the money game and
now let big names such as Nike determine their colors. Va Tech has always been
Maroon and Orange. Shame! Shame! Not a good example.
If I learned anything from this past summer’s conference fiasco, it’s that money drives decisions in sports. NIKE has been a good partner for Virginia Tech but we do have the right to say no to any of their ideas. If we hate something we don’t have to do it. However, being one of the 10 teams (I said 8 in the article but it’s actually 10) to wear select NIKE Pro-Combat jersey is an honor. While it doesn’t directly affect recruiting, this may be something that piques a kid’s interest and causes him to look at VT again. That may (along with other factors) cause the kid to visit. So while I know the fanbase is split amongst this, I don’t think we’re succumbing to NIKE just for the money. Hell whether you like the jersey’s or not, if we beat Boise St 49-0, nobody is going to care. In fact Beamer might want to wear them again haha.
These are f’ing sick. Dont know why yall are upset. Beat Boise!
Whether the Hokies wear Orange, Maroon, Black or White, the same football team will be on the field. If anything, this is not to amp up the team, but to amp up the fans who have their first opportunity at home field advantage on a “neutral” site. I believe no matter what politics, gimmicks, or amount of money involved, giving the fans one more reason to be excited about this game is beneficial to our team. These uniforms are nothing “amazing,” but they are interesting, different, and, I believe, make the colors of Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange stand out more than on our normal uniforms. This picture does nothing because he is only in the jersey and doesn’t even have pads. Wait for Monday when Tech makes their entrance and a good 2/3rds of the stadium, hopefully dressed in black, explodes for the Hokies… now THAT will be intimidating… not the uniform.
Keep this civil, no calling out other posters. I appreciate the debate especially since this is a hot button topic amongst the fanbase right now but just keep it civil.
It’s official, here is a pic of Tyrod and Graves in full uniform: http://twitpic.com/2k8q4h
Too bad Boise kicked VT’s butt! Maybe they should be the ones worthy to have sponsors and jerseys. Second thought- they don’t need it!
Wait what? What are you talking about? Boise is part of Nike’s new Pro-Combat stuff as well. They wore theirs that night along with our Black Uni’s.
