We Don’t Have a Playoff, We Have Bowls…

chick fil a bowl1 We Dont Have a Playoff, We Have Bowls...So here is one the that college basketball does far better than college football:  Selection Sunday.  Yes today is pretty cool finding out who's going to what bowl, but it has no where near the anticipation and excitement as seeing the brackets come out at 6 pm on that early Sunday in March.  Plus, most of the bowl game match ups are not surprises, like the Virginia Tech vs Tennessee Chick-fil-A bowl match up in Atlanta.

This post has some of my off-the-cuff thoughts on Bowl Selection Sunday.First, yesterday (conference college football championship Saturday) has definitely become my favorite day in sports.  Its only better when the Hokies are playing.  This post is not going to get into my usual rant on why we don't need a playoff in CFB, but the drama that plays out on the final day of games is special.  Every year, it does not fail to deliver a compelling set of games.

I was a serious couch potato, actually starting with Friday night (my wife went to Ohio U, so I obliged and watch some MAC championship), but through the Cincy - Pitt, Houston - ECU, Bama - UF, UT - Nebraska, and Georgia Tech - Clemson.  Of course it didn't hurt that I was barely hanging on to first place in my annual pick 'em pool, so I had some serious cash on the line with some of the other games like USC - Arizona, Fresno St - Illinois, and Hawaii - Wisconsin.

On the bowls, I'll have lots more to say on the Hokies and Volunteers as the game preparations progress, but my reaction is probably a lot like most of yours.  Another Atlanta game, another SEC game, another game where the weight of the ACC is on VT's shoulders to stand up to the big, bad SEC.  A loss will be more damaging than a win will be satisfying.  I'm excited for the match up, but I have a pit in my gut reliving the game vs Georgia a few years ago.

That said, the Chick-fil-A Bowl is pretty kick-ass.  New Year's Eve versus the SEC in Atlanta is pretty cool.

Also, the Fiesta Bowl with Boise State vs TCU is sort of pointless, isn't it?  I mean its cool these undefeated mid-majors are in but what's one beating the other going to tell us?  Put one against Florida or Iowa and the other against Georgia Tech or Cincinnati.

USC is in the Emerald Bowl against BC.  You can fall down the standings quick with a young quarterback and a shaky defense.  BC has a track record of winning bowl games, because they get send to lousy ones due to their horrid ticket sales.  However I don't see them beating even a down USC.  The ACC has so ok matchups otherwise (UNC vs Pitt, Clemson vs Kentucky, Miami vs Wisconsin, FSU vs WVU, GT vs Iowa).  Hopefully there is a few wins in there.

Finally, what's with all the January 2nd games?  International, Papajohns.com, Liberty, and Alamo have all scheduled their bowls on January 2, as if that will give them extra credibility.  Weird.
