Virginia Tech vs UNC Point Spread, Orange Effect Uniforms

images[1]This is a post is NOT about the beaten to death subject of Georgia Tech blocking techniques against the Hokies two Saturdays ago.  In fact, I haven't posted about that at all, though I'm sure you've found plenty of material to read on that subject on other sources.  There's a big game tomorrow night in Blacksburg between Virginia Tech and North Carolina, and the Hokies are 16.5 point favorites.  That seems like a lot.

This post also has thoughts on some other spreads this weekend.  And then there are those uniforms.

UNC has been a disappointment this year.  Frankly, I was never a believer in Butch Davis' crew.  That's a program that is going to have to show me before I believe, so until then I'll still consider them a bottom half of the league-type team.  That said, they are still capable of playing teams in the upper half (like Virginia Tech) well, and have the last few years.  They can beat VT with some fortunate bounces and with the defense they already line up.

A 16.5 line between VT and UNC seems high, but I guess it reflects the expectation that the Tar Heels won't score.  In general, these teams play close games, even in previous years when the talent level between the too was probably greater, so I'd personally expect it to be close than that.

Other lines that look interesting to me:

  • Florida State -9 over NC State. Is FSU good enough to be 9 points better than anyone?
  • Iowa -17.5 over Indiana. I have a funny feeling about this game.  You heard it here first.
  • Florida -15 over Georgia. UF fans aren't happy right now.  Its tough being 7-0 with Tebow at QB.
  • Boston College -5.5 over Central Michigan. BC could have really done the ACC a favor (and frankly all conferences wanting an extra BCS bid) by beating ND last week.  Now don't loose to directional Michigan.
  • Virginia -7 over Duke. Take the Blue Devils.
  • Texas Tech -7 over Kansas. I like Kansas, but more important, if you haven't been following Mike Leach and his "fat little girlfriend" comments, you should.  Hilarious.
  • Vandy12 over Georgia Tech. The irony is that GT will probably now lose to Vandy and/or UGa, be ranked lower than VT, but still win the ACC and go to a BCS game.

So Frank Beamer's blog has announced that the Hokies will be wearing the orange jerseys with maroon pants for Thursdays game, in conjunction with Orange Effect.  I'm a fan of neither.  It seems we are becoming the Oregon of the East, and I don't know what Nike is paying us to wear these hidious things, but we really should stick to orange VT uniform 150x150 Virginia Tech vs UNC Point Spread, Orange Effect Uniformsmaroon or white and use orange as it was intended (an accessory color).

Years from now game film will emerge with the Hokies wearing these construction-worker replicate jerseys and it will feel like watching the slide show of your teenage years at your wedding.  Shhhsssh.

Anyway, have a safe trip down to Blacksburg, and Go Hokies!

I figured VT colors were decided along time ago. The uniforms they are wearing tonight…..someone ought to have their asses whipped. For god’s sake, McDonalds designed their interiors and employees uniforms to “calm” eaters (brown) as well as encourage speed eating (orange).
We studied it in basic psychology, yet VT has allowed their team to be dressed as McDonalds employees.Who approved this crap?
Obviously, the Carolina players feel at home with those “soothing” colors and are currently playing above their level…..Jeez, do we have to draw a picture here?

VT needed to spend less time complaining about 4 chop blocks 12 days earlier and prepare for a very average UNC team. Kam needs to shut his mouth and play. Good luck in the Meineke Bowl in Charlotte against … who cares. BCS team? Holly Cow!

Sour grapes won’t do us any good now. I think the focus shouldn’t be on the players at all. If you examine the play calling in the UNC game it looks like the coaches are lost. If Tech is on the opposition 38 yard line with 3rd and 4, the coaches have to know whether they are going for it on 4th down. Why call a pass on 3rd down? This increases the difficulty and limits the options on 4th down. The result… two incomplete passes and instead of pinning the opponent deep in their end with a punt, we give it to them with good field position. Defensively, on 3rd and 4 Tech corners and backers lay off 5 yards and give up the 3 yard first down pass way too often. Why was Grimm, a linebacker, responsible for a wide receiver on the touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone? Bad defensive call from the bench of course. This has been a year of poor coaching and this needs to be corrected.
