Some Things Are More Important Than Sports

We haven't done this before at VTF.com. This blog is dedicated to Hokie sports and its fans, and some may not like us straying from that. However for over a week we've been captured by events in Iran and the fundamental struggle for freedom its people face. What's fascinating is how web 2.0 technologies and social media have become a weapon against tyranny.

We figure the least we can do is use our little piece of cyberspace to offer our support.

Is there any more pure struggle for the freedom that America represents than what's going on in Iran? Rigged elections, denied right to protest, government controlling reporters, internet restrictions, and the "be quiet and just accept it" attitude of Iran's theocracy. It doesn't get any worse. Iran has always seemed interesting, filled with young people with a thirst for the modern world. They live with a government not compatible with that vision. It was bound to explode.

The twitter updates have been fascinating. If you haven't been following (or don't use twitter), people from around the globe have used it to stay up to date and support each other on the Iran occurances. Here are some of the key tweets to check out.

Someone said that after 9/11, many in the world said "Today, we are all Americans". I think Iran deserves at least one blog post.
