Hokie Offense: Ranking the Players

tyrod taylor p1 Hokie Offense: Ranking the PlayersAs a follow up to our post on Hokie Defense player rankings, its time to rank the offensive players.  Again, to be clear on the criteria I'm using, this list is ranked based on each player's overall value to the unit as a whole.  In other words, who would be most difficult to do without.

The buzz with Hokie fans is that there is probably more talent on the offensive side of the ball in Blacksburg than has existed in a long time.  But offense we know is so much more than talent, it takes chemistry, schemes, rhythm, playcalling and much more for a unit to perform and those things have often been missing with the Hokies.

This is obviously highly subjective so feel free to leave me your comments.

  1. Tyrod Taylor (QB).  You might as well make Tyrod, #1, 2, 3, and 4.  If Tyrod isn't under center this year, the rest of this list is meaningless.
  2. Ed Wang (LT).  We supposedly have depth on the offensive line.  But your senior left tackle going down causes a massive re-shuffle and huge headaches.
  3. Sergio Render(LG).  Maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on the OL, but the skill position guys can be plugged in and out.  The senior OL guys are irreplaceable.
  4. Darren Evans(RB).  Let's face it, the Hokie offense is a running offense and its dependant on a stud RB to tote that rock.  Thats Evans.
  5. Greg Boone (TE).  I don't think we've seen his full potential, but a few games into 2009 I believe we'll see how critical he will be in a variety of capcities:  blocking, receiving, and in the "Wild Turkey".
  6. Blake DeChristopher (RT).  Broken record, but tackles are critical and must perform.
  7. Ryan Williams (RB).  Hasn't played a down, but another guy I think a few games into the season will be a star.
  8. Danny Coale (WR).  Ranking the WRs is tough because 1) I believe there are a lot that will be fighting to get on the field, and 2) there's not a lot of seperation between them.  But Coale in  my opinion is the best.
  9. Beau Warren (C).  The quarterback of the OL.
  10. Jaymes Brooks (RG).  Brooks is another key plug into the OL expected to be a solid performer.Jarret Boykin (WR).  Jarret needs to make a lot of catches this year, including a lot of TD catches.  There were hardly any last year.
  11. Greg Nosal (LG).  The staff is very high on him as he has shot up from freshman TE to starting LG out of nowhere.  Let's hope he performs.
  12. Dyrell Roberts (WR).  Dyrell is a player that could easily be in the top 5 of this list if his talent catches up to his knowledge of the position.  That would be big for the Hokie offense.
  13. Kenny Jefferson (FB).  The fullback has been de-emphasized in the Hokie offensive but is still an underated position.
  14. Marcus Davis (WR).  Tough player to rank.  What are we going to get our of Marcus?  After spending a bunch of time at QB, can he catch up and contribute at WR?  He certainly has talent.
  15. Andrew Lanier (OL).  Coaches are very high on him and could easily be a starter at somepoint.
  16. Xavier Boyce (WR).  Another WR in the mix that will fight for plays and catches.
  17. Josh Ogelsby (RB).  Ogelsby has been underutilized, but is talented and hungry.
  18. Richard Graham (OL).  Graham is an experienced guy who will play a lot and start if any OL injuries occur.
  19. Sam Wheeler (TE).  This is a big if, because Sam is coming off injury.  But before the knew injury Wheeler was a go to receiver.  This spot may be filled with freshman Logan Thomas.
  20. Nick Becton (LT).  Most talented of the young back-up OL, and will get in the rotation.

So go ahead, tell me what's wrong with this list.

I think Boykin should be higher because right now I think he’s the only WR we have who can stretch the field. Also, and this is really nit-picky, but I think Wang and Render should flip-flop. Wang has been inconsistent and if we lost him, I think there wouldn’t be a drop-off sliding DeChristopher from RT to LT. Render, meanwhile, makes the running game go and has proven he can play either guard slot.

I agree with furrer4heisman…. Boykin should definitely on that list… definitely above boyce. Boykin and Coale are our 2 top recievers.
