I heard a broadcaster on ESPN Radio today call the NIT the "3 dirtiest words in college basketball". I always thought it stood for the "Not In the Tournament" tournament. Even if you are a pretty hard core college basketball fan, I suspect that unless your team is playing in it, the NIT gets zero of your attention this time of year.
For Virginia Tech fans, I wonder how many do care. We're starting to become a bit of a regular in this tourney, and I'll admit I always watch the games (albeit sometimes on TiVo), but the wins and loses don't get me going in one direction or the other that much.
The Hokies Game vs. Duquesne in the first round was a dandy, regardless of the circumstances. I'm intrigued with today's match-up against Baylor, for nothing else because its my sister-in-law's alma mater and I've heard her and my brother do the "Aaaahhhhhwww Sick 'eM'" cheer a ton of times (usually in football) season.
But part of me wishes this NIT thing would just get out of the way. If you love the NCAA tourney (and what sports fan doesn't), and your team is going deep into the NIT, that makes for an overload of college basketball viewing duties. So with the Hokies, I just assume they get out of this NIT early, or got all the way to the final four at Madison Square Garden (I assume they still play it there?) where there is at least a inkling of relevance in the sports world.
Disco Era Virginia Tech Baseball Jerseys
I have to give credit to furrer4heisman at Gobbler Country for pointing this out on his blog, but the Virginia Tech baseball team is going with some retr0, disco style jerseys tonight for their game with Georgia Tech. These are the coolest Virginia Tech jerseys I've seen on any team in a while, and while some may not like them, they fit the disco them. This is one Virginia Tech jersey I may have to add to my collection (and I have a lot).
