Well the teeth gnashing, stomach churning, and TV cursing continues tomorrow as the Hokie men's basketball team begin their brutal end of season stretch against FSU. It seems as though the Hokies have been a bubble team for an eternity, and certainly from day one of this season. So is anyone surprised as to where we sit today? Not me.
The season never seems to play out like you expect, but you knew the Hokies would make it interesting. My guess is these last 5 games will have some of their own surprises.
I agree with Furrer4Heisman over at Gobbler Country in that sometime I'm glad I travel for a profession and can't always watch the Hokies. It was painful enough listening to them over the internet against UVa on Wednesday. The energy wasn't there, especially on defense, and the Hokies just don't seem like a good team right now.
Leading up to that game, my thoughts were to how much media coverage of VT basketball in the DC area seemed to be going through the incredible transformation the Virginia Tech football went through a decade ago. It is amazing how much credence University of Maryland fans and alums put into beating VIRGINIA TECH in basketball. When losing a game give you relevance, your program is starting to mean something.
However this season will likely be defined by these next 5 games. It could be a massive collapse. The schedule is brutal and the team lacks confidence. On the contrary, would anyone really be surprise if Seth Greenberg and the streaky Hokie Hoopsters upset UNC, Duke, FSU at home, or even beat Clemson on the road? No one would be surprise because it has happened all too regularly.
My guess is reality will land somewhere in between. The Hokies will win 1, maybe 2 games and as usual will go into the ACC tournament with work to do. Is there ever a year that the ACC tournament doesn't have NCAA tourney implications for Virginia Tech?
The next 3 weeks will not be for the faint of heart. Get your Hokie gear on, and enjoy!
Go Hokies!

It is interesting, though, to watch the basketball team begin to grow in prominence. It’s frustrating to watch the struggle, especially when the team looks to be capable of so much more, but I like the point about how beating VT is starting to mean a little bit. ACC tourney should be entertaining.
