The Virginia Tech men's basketball team got its signature win for the year and a premier victory for the program beating Wake Forest on the road last night. Part of what is fun about the Seth Greenberg era of Hokie Hoops is that each year he will have his team super ready for a some games against truly elite teams. You don't always know when its coming, but follow the season, and it will come.
I was watching with friends and fellow Hokies, and when the Hokies went up 4-0 my buddy and I both turned to each other and said something to the effect of "yes, this is the night".
Granted, the frustrating part of Seth's version of the Hokies is that they play equally unfocused on some nights against inferior competition. I've blogged about this plenty, and its frustrating. But like I said, if nothing else, it makes following a Virginia Tech mens basketball season worthwhile because you'll get some gems like last night.
Now many in hindsight will say that last nights upset was predictable. Wake's first game as ranked #1, against a conference foe they are expected to beat, sandwiched against better competition - that adds up to a trap game. But the Hokies have a history of hitting these North Carolina schools hard, matching their intensity, toughness, being scrappy, and simply 'just playing' instead of being intimidated.
As the game progressed last night, VT taking leads and Wake making runs back at them, those were the words I kept saying to myself to describe Malcolm, AD, Jeff, J.T., etc. They 'just kept playing' Wake, not really conscience of being on the road, against the #1 team, against better talent, etc. Wake would make a run, and they would 'just keep playing', kept rebounding, kept stealing, kept defending, and most important kept scoring.
Now I could have done without all the missed free throw shooting at the end the game, but even with those, last night was just "the night" for Seth and his team, and they would not be denied.
So for a few days, let's forget about all those under-achieving nights, and enjoy this win.
Go Hokies!!
