As we digest the first half of the Hokie football season and gear up for what lies ahead, a quick look at another Hokie program. The Virginia Tech Men's Golf team is competing this weekend at The Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon, GA against a loaded field, and right now they are tied for the lead. The final round is on Monday, so take a break from the message boards and point your browser to the leaderboard tomorrow to see if the Hokies can pull things out.
The Virginia Tech Golf Team has had some remarkable success in recent years. The had a stunning come from behind win at the ACC Championships in 2007 when they charged back from 4th place going into the final round to tie Georgia Tech for the title. In addition to other big wins and strong showings that year, Drew Weaver, a senior on this year's team, won the British Amateur Open, which qualified him to play in the Open Championship (aka the British Open), where he also performed well. To have a Hokie golfer achieve that, especially in the months following April 16, 2007, was sureal.
The Hokie men's golf programs is on solid footing, and the Brickyard is evidence. There are 15 teams in the tourney, and 8 of them are ranked by Golf World coaches poll (including Georgia Tech, Florida State, Clemson, and Wake Forest), and the Hokies are holding their own. Weaver is tied for 2nd on the players leader board, he shot a 68 / 73 in the first two rounds. Mashall Bailey and Aaron Eckstein, two talented sophmores, are up there tied for 14th.
In their first tournament this year, the VCU Shootout near Richmond, the Hokie golf team entered the final round tied for second place, but finished 6th after a falling back the final day. Weaver finished 10th in that tourney, and Wake Forest won it.
By the way, in case you are wondering, UCLA is the top golf school in the nation, Clemson is ranked 6th, highest in the ACC. But the ACC is darn competitive with Wake, Duke, FSU, GT, UNC, NC State, VT, UMD, UVA all being ranked or 'others receiving votes'.
Let's hope the Hokies pull it out!!
