In a season full of drama, yesterday's Virginia Tech vs. Florida State game provided plenty and with implications that will likely affect the rest of the Hokies' season. Back to back losses have not been common for the Virginia Tech football program, but most fans are probably buckled in for a a roller coaster ride at this point. So with an off weekend coming before a Thursday night game with Maryland, we get to spend 10 days wondering who will line up under center for the Hokies.
Some thoughts on the FSU game:
- Its a simple formula in football, pretty much a cliche: turnovers decide games. All things being equal (and by looking at the stats, they pretty much were between VT and FSU), this game came down to Virginia Tech's 2 costly turnovers and the Hokies inability to get any from FSU. The latter is probably more significant, this Hokie team is not good enough to win period without getting turnovers from the opponent. We also missed a FG and they missed none, and in my book a missed FG is similar to a turnover.
- For most, this game will be remembered for the Hokie quaterback situation. While injuries are unfortunate and we feel horrible for Taylor and Glennon, it really created fascinating football. I thought Glennon did as well as could be accepted. We know his limitations (too many sacks) but all in all he lead the offense fairly well. And the Virginia Tech offense may be the only one in the country that looks just as good with its 3rd string QB (who's mainly a WR) as it does with its starters. Seriously, there wasn't much drop off. Even with Taylor and Glennon we had no 2 minute offense to speak of.
- Our kickoffs are not deep enough and it costs us hidden yards.
- Jason Worilds is very fun to watch and Cody Grimm is more of a player than I ever thought he'd be.
- If its a game vs. FSU you can count on 1) special teams hurting the Hokies (aka the roughing the kicker penalty that was a huge momentum shift) and 2) some talented or tall FSU WR catching deep balls over our DBs (aka Greg Carr). Both of those were huge.
- You hate to bring referees into the discussion, but they missed a few calls, namely the FSU fumble at the goal line and Carr's push off on Macho on the aforementioned deep catch
It will be very interesting to see how this quarterback situation plays out. We need our best out there because the ACC championship is still in reach and nobody seems to want to win it (is Virginia really a possibility?). But frankly this is one of those season where expectation should be tempered, and hey if we aren't gonna have a championship run why not let this 3rd, 4th string QB drama play (for example, who backs up Holt?)
You have to admit its interesting, and am I the only one who feel pretty comfortable with Cory Holt playing vs. the Terps? So far this year we've started a drop back passer who is not mobile enough for our OL (Glennon) and a mobile quarterback is who inaccurate (Taylor), and neither has made this offense hum. Maybe Holt is a happy medium? We'll see...
Go Hokies

You have done a good job on your blog… sell some Virginia Tech basketball stuff on Ebay, please… I’ve also previewed the Hokie men’s basketball upcoming season.
There was no video evidence to overturn the Sims TD, and the Carr ‘push’ was nothing in comparison to how he got raped earlier in the game and didn’t get the call.
Good game.
I actually wonder if VT will ever win the straight up special teams war against FSU with Bobby still coaching. He’s obviously in Beamer’s head. Its somewhat amusing at times because you know something is going to happen…its just a matter of when.
Even with last year’s win, it still feels like VT has a ‘FSU monkey’ on its back.
