Georgia Tech Game Thoughts

The Hokies get a win, in a game that probably played out like many expected:  close, ragged, and for VT on 249111 Georgia Tech Game Thoughtsthe shoulders of Tyrod Taylor.  There were some good things to take away from in this game, which I'll blog about this week, but let's face it every week is going to be a challenge with this young squad.  GT out-gained VT but hurt itself with turnovers and critical penalties, and the VT offense certainly didn't silence all its critics.

The Hokies had some good drives and scored enough to win, but offense is still a work in progress.  It was good to see the running game get going, Darren Evans seems to be growing up before our eyes (more on that this week as well).  But let's face it, most of the big plays were Tyrod scrambles, either designed or un-designed.

His insertion into the line up feels almost identical to last year, in that you have a offense that was struggling to run, struggling to protect the quarterback, struggling to get into a rhythm.  So enter a dynamic play-maker who immediately allows Bryan Stinespring to just work around all those issues.  Again this is why I think critics of the VT offense / offensive coaches / schemes (which has been beaten to death this week) won't be happy, and TT feels like a 'quick fix'.  Regardless, its all about making plays and winning games, and that's why we'll probably see TT starting under center for VT in everygame for the next 3 seasons.

Other notes:

  • There were also signs that this defense can be a dominant 'Hokie' defense.  Just glimpsis, mainly the defensive line.
  • It was good to see the TE get a few catches.  With all the hype surrounding Greg Boone, not much has come to fruition.  Chris Drager got a catch and I kept hoping they would come back to him.
  • Brett Bowden is a weapon punting the ball.  Special teams were good except what was the deal with that opening kick-off?  Never seen a ball go so far out of bounds.
  • Finally, the unis.  Put me in the group that thinks the orange colored stuff should stay locked in the close forever.

Personally, I like the uniforms. They will clash bad with the UNC baby blue.

Darren Evans is the key to the season.

I agree that Bowden is certainly a weapon punting, however, he needs to learn to get the ball off sooner. He’s had one blocked and several more almost blocked.
